About Sir John Acland, 1st Baronet of Columb John
Son and heir. Named in the will of his uncle Sir John, and exr. of the wills of his father and grandmother, created a Baronet 24 June 1644. Will 1 December 1646, pro., 30 November 1648 by Henry Halse, cousin-german of deceased during the minority of the exr, Charles Acland. Admon. granted 25 June 1670 to John Harrison, principal creditor, by reason of the death of the exr. and Hugh Acland the next brother having renounced, 2nd Admon. granted 5 July 1671 to William Brown, principal creditor, John Harrison having died. P.C.C. (Essex 157).
DeBrett's: Sir John Acland, on whom a baronetcy was conferred 24 June, 1644; but the letters-patent not being enrolled or having been destroyed during the civil wars, new ones were granted to his son, Jugh, 21 Jan, 1677-8, with precedence from the earlier date. He was distinguished by his zealous devotion to the cause of loyalty; and at one time the garrison of Columb John was the only armed force (according to Lord Clarendon) which Charles I had in the whole county of Devon.
