About Sir John Bigod, of Settrington
I am the younger son of Hugh, Cheif Justice of England, who was in turn the younger son of Hugh Bigod, the 3rd Earl of Norfolk. When my uncle Roger Bigod, the 4th Earl of Norfolk died, my brother Roger became the 5th Earl of Norfolk. Since my brother Roger was a wastrel he beggared the family estate in debt to the King, so the King took over the estates when he died without issue. By rights I should have been the 6th Earl of Norfolk. The King made one of his favorites the new Earl of Norfolk. It eventually became a Dukedom and to this day is among the most elite Dukedoms in Great Britain Because I husbanded my inheritance I remained a Knight and founded the Bigod dynasty in Settrington.
