SIR JOHN EDMONSTONE OF THAT ILK AND EDNAM

Sir John Edmonstone of that Ilk and Edam, here treated, is the son of Andrew Edmonstone of that Ilk and Ednam and the grandson of John Edmonstone of Edmonstone and Ednam His mother is Alison Cockburn On 2 February 1594 he had a charter under the Great Seal of Scotland which confirmed his possession of barony of Ednam in the sheriffdom of Roxburgh, and other lands in the sheriffdoms of Berwick and Edinburgh. Death

Sir John Edmonstone of that Ilk and Ednam, here treated, died before 15 July 1630, the date upon which Master James RaIth and his wife Elize Foullar were confirmed in their possession of Edmondstoun. RMS 1620-33: 1601

2 February 1593-94: Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland by which James VI, King of Scots, confirms possession of of the land and barony of Ednam in the sheriffdom of Roxburgh to JOANNI EDMONDSTOUN son and heir apparent of Andree Edmondstoun fiar of that Ilk (feodatarii de eodem). The charter also confirms his possession of the lands of Ryislaw and Little Blakburne in the sheriffdom of Berwick, and a one third part of the land and mill of Nudrie-Merschell in the sheriffdom of Edinburgh. The office of Coroner of Lothian was also confirmed to him. Andrew's father Sir John Edmondstoun of that Ilk continued to hold a liferent interest in these lands, and after his decease this was to pass to Andrew. John Edmondstoun junior, and his lawful heirs, were to hold these lands, whom failing they were to pass to Patrick Edmondstoun, brother german of Sir John, whom failing they were to pass to Andrew's nearest male heir bearing the name and arms of Edmondstoun. John Edmonston, junior, is said to be the grandson of Sir John Cockburn of Ormiston by his daughter Alison Cockburn: "D. Joannis Cokburne de Ormestoun militis justiciarie clerici, avi dicti Jo. E. minoris (ex quondam Alisona C. ejus filia legitima nati)". RMS 1593-1608: 56

6 June 1614: Contract of Marriage between John Edmonstone of that Ilk and Anne Stirling. On 19 July 1614, Anne Stirling, identified as the future wife of John Edmonstone of that Ilk, had a charter confirming her liferent interest in the lands of Ryslaw in the sheriffdom of Berwick, and the lands of Edmam in the sheriffdom of Roxburgh. 20 September 1627: Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland by which King Charles I confirms that Mr. Alexander Morriesoun of Prestongrange has resigned in favour of Master Janes Raith, Advocate, and his wife Elize Fouller, the ville and lands of Edmonstoun called the Maynes of Edmonstoun, and the lands of Cauldcoittis, in the regality of Mussleburgh and sheriffdom of Edinburgh, together with a one third part of the land and mill of Nudrie-Merschell. His resignation was made with the consent of a number of interested parties, including Sir John Edmonstoun of that Ilk and his wife Lady Jean Lawson: "consensu D. Joannis Edmonstoun de eodem militis et Domine Jeanne Lawsoun ejus conjugis". RMS 1620-33: charter number 1150

15 July 1630: Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland made in favour of Master James Raith, Advocate, and his wife Elize Foullar, by which King Charles I confirms their possession of the town and lands of Edmondstoun. This land had previously been owned by the deceased Andrew Edmondstoun of that Ilk and his son, the also now deceased Sir John Edmondstoun of that Ilk, who had disposed of it to Master James Raith and his wife Elize: "per quond. And. Edmondstoun de eodem et quond. D. Jo. E. ejus filium edificatis et per dictum D. Jo. dictis Jac. et El. dispositis". RMS 1620-33: charter number 1601

30 November 1633: Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland in favour of Sir David Creichtoun of Lugtoun-Crichtoun, which identifies one of his tenants at Gilmertoun as John Edmonstone, now of Ednam, heir apparent of his grandfather, the deceased Andrew Edmonstone of that Ilk, and his father, the deceased Sir John Edmonstone of that Ilk as the son and heir apparent of the deceased Andrew: "que fuerunt Jo. Edmestoun tunc de Ednem, heredis apparentis quondam Andree E. de eodem ejus avi, saltern quond. D. Joannis E. de eodem filii et heredis apparentis dicti And. ac patris dicti Jo".
