Biographical Summary

Lord John Hamilton had a natural son afterwards Sir John Hamilton of Lettrick (legitimated on 22 December 1600). He married Jean, daughter of Alexander Campbell, Bishop of Brechin, and was father of the first Lord Bargany. The Scots Peerage IV: 373

Sir John Hamilton of Lettrick natural son of John, first Marquess of Hamilton obtained a legitimation under the Great Seal, 22 December 1600, and acquired considerable estates. He had a charter of confirmation to himself, and Jean Campbell his wife, of the castle of Kinclevin, in Perthshire, 25 May 1608. He had a charter 15 June 1624, of the lands of Bargany, from whence he took his ultimate desigation, Carlock, and other lands of Ayrshire. He died soon after 1637. By his wife, Jean, daughter of Alexander Campbell, Bishop of Brechin, of the Ardkinglass family, he had issue. The Scots Peerage II: 27
