About Sir John Riddell, 1st Baronet of Riddell
Biographical Summary
"Sir John Riddell, of Riddell, co Roxburghe, son and heir of Andrew Riddell, 'Laird of Riddell', M.P. [S] for Roxburghe, 1617 and 1621, by Violet, daughter of William Douglas of Pumpherston, was, after having been Knighted at an early age, created a Baronet [S], 14 May 1628, sealed 15 February 1629, but not recorded in the Great Seal Register, with rem. to his heirs male whatsoever and with a grant of, presumably, 16,000 acres in Nova Scotia, of which he had seizin, February 1629. He married firstly, before 30 September 1602, Agnes, 2nd daughter of Sir John Murray, of Blackbarony, by his 1st wife, Margaret, daughter of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick. He married secondly, before 1630, Jane, widow of Hon. James Commendator of Montrose (younger son of William, Earl of Morton [S]), daughter of Sir James Anstruther of Anstruther, by Jean, daughter of Thomas Scot of Abbotshall. By her he had no male issue. Both were living July 1630, but he died March 1632."
