About Sir Paon de Roët

NOTE: Paon de Roet's parentage of Katherine Swynford (de Roet) is inferred from Paon's epitaph (in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral, London): Hic jacet Paganus Roet, Miles, Guyenne Rex Armorum, Pater Catherine Ducise Lancastriae. This parentage is generally accepted.

This person and their pedigree are currently documented from "The Royal Lineage of Our Noble and Gentle Families together with Their Paternal Ancestry" Compiled by Joseph Foster, 1885

A Knight In Queen Philippa's (Edward Iii) Household

"Paon" is also seen in early records as "Payne", "Payen", "Paonnet", and "Paganus". The surname is seen as "De Rodio", "Roelt", ""Roit", "Rouet", "Ruet", and "De Roeulx".

Paon de Roet was a herald and Knight who was involved in the early stages of the Hundred Years War, and who later became attached to the court of King Edward III of England. He became an ancestor of the monarchs of England by way of his daughter Katherine's marriage to John of Gaunt. Another of Paon de Roet's daughters married English poet Geoffrey Chaucer.

The tomb of Sir Paon de Roet was described by English poet John Weever as "once a fair marble stone inlaid all over with brass, nothing but the heads of a few brazen nails are at this day. Is idle, previously engraved with the representation and Coat of Arms of the party defunct, thus much of a mangled funeral inscription wa of late times perspicious to be read." The inscription on the tomb: "hic Jacet Pagnanus Roet Miles Guyenne Rex Armorum Pater Catherine Ducisse Lancastrie" which, translated is: "Here lies Paon de Roet, knight, Guyenne Kng of Arms, father of Katherine Duchess of Lancaster."

NOTE: Use this information only as clues to do further research, as there is much conflicting information regarding this person on the internet. Much of it appears to have been repeated from one site to the next, without original source documentation. I also do. Not have original source documentation. My interest is that this gentleman may be my 18th great grandfather.

Paon de Roet (c.1310-1380), also referred to as Sir Gilles de Roet, was a herald and knight from Hainaut who was involved in the early stages of the Hundred Years War. He became attached to the court of King Edward III of England through the king's marriage to Philippa of Hainaut.

He is most notable for the fact that he became the ancestor of the monarchs of England because his daughter Katherine married John of Gaunt. Her children, given the surname "Beaufort", became the forebears of the Tudor dynasty through Margaret Beaufort. Another of his daughters also made a notable marriage, to the poet Geoffrey Chaucer.
