Sir Patrick Cheyne, knight, of Essilmont was mentioned in an abstracted entry on the The Commissarint Record of Edinburgh. Register of Testaments. First Section--1514-1600, probably at the death of his father, Thomas Cheyne, feur, of Essilmont, whose entry was dated 27 July 1565. When James Hepburn [Bothwell] fled Scotland in disgrace, he went to his sister Christian and Patrick Cheyne in Shetland where he was almost recaptured.3

Patrick Cheyne, Laird of Esslemont was a great supporter of Queen Mary. George, Earl of Huntly, was her military leader in the North and after being duped by Queen Elizabeth's agents to sign a truce, Elizabeth's troops seized Edinburgh Castle. Huntly renewed the truce, 18 December 1572, and sent Patrick on a mission to France in an attempt to gain their support for further resistance.7

11 July 1574. Patrick Chene, Laird of Esslemont, Alexander Seton, younger of Meldrum and Alexander Drummond of Medhope were made sureties to see that George, Earl of Huntly obeyed the orders of Queen Elizabeth in the collection of ecclesiastical revenues.8

Helen Cheyne (2311) was said to have been the daughter of Patrick Chene of Essilmont (2250) and Helenor Bruce (2310) (The Genealogist) and A. Y. Cheyne, The Cheyne Family in Scotland). Three sasines, cited later, state she was the daughter of Walter Cheyne of Arnage (2391). I agree with the later.9
