Sir Patrick V 9th Earl of Dunbar, 2nd Earl of March de Dunbar, 9th Earl of March & 8th Earl of Dunbar

Patrick de Dunbar, 8th Earl of Dunbar was born circa 1285.1 He was the son of Patrick de Dunbar, 7th Earl of Dunbar and Lady Marjory Comyn.2 He married, firstly, Ermengarde (?) before 1303.1 He married, secondly, Agnes Randolph (also known as Black Agnes), daughter of Thomas Randolph, 1st Earl of Moray and Isabella Stewart, after September 1320.1 He died on 11 November 1368, without surviving male issue.1

He succeeded to the title of 8th Earl of Dunbar [S., c. 1115] on 10 October 1308.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of March [Scotland., c. 1290] on 10 October 1308.1

In 1314 he was initially pro-English, playing host at Dunbar Castle to the defeated King Edward II after the rout of Bannockburn and facilitating his escape back to England.1 He held the office of Sheriff of Lothian before 1318.1

In 1318 he supported Scottish independence and helped take Berwick.1 He fought in the Battle of Dupplin in 1332, where he commanded Scottish troops.1 He fought in the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333, where he commanded Scottish troops.1

After 1333 he again went over to the English but after a year or so ratted on them a second time.1

He fought in the Battle of Neville's Cross in 1346, where he commanded the Scottish left wing.1 He was created 1st Earl of March and Moray [Scotland] in 1357/58.1

In February 1360/61 he appears to have deserted the Scots Crown yet a third time since he is called a rebel and his lands are pronounced forfeited.1 On 25 July 1368 he resigned his earldoms of Dunbar and of March, with a regrant to his great-nephew and heir male, George de Dunbar.1 On his death, his Earldom of March and Moray appears to have reverted to the Crown.1

Sir Patrick Dunbar (before 1310 - after 1356)

Warrick, 1899 states that Isabella (Geilis) married John Dunbar, the brother of Patrick, the 9th Earl.

Sir Patrick, in 1331, as son of Sir Alexander, son of the Earl, quit-claimed his rights in Swinwood to the monks of Coldingham. He was present at the battle of Durham in 1316, and also at Poictiers in 1356; but died and was buried at Candia, on his way to the Holy Land in 1356-57. Sir Patrick Dunbar was born before 1310. Some sources state the father of George & John was John the younger brother of Patrick the 9th earl of Dunbar. He was the son of Sir Alexander Dunbar.

Sir Patrick Dunbar married Isabella Randolph, daughter of Thomas Randolph Earl of Moray and Isabel Stewart, circa 1320. He married, perhaps as his second wife, Isabella, younger daughter of Thomas Randolph, first Earl of Moray.

Sir Patrick's seal, attached to the writ of 1352, shows a lion rampant within a double tressure. Legend, 'SIGILLVM PATRICII DE DVNBAR.' His wife's seal shows a shield with impaled arms, the first of husband and wife known in Scotland. Dexter, a lion rampant, within a royal tressure; sinister, three cushions in a royal tressure for Randolph. Legend, 'SIGILL ISABEL DE DUNBAR.

Patrick died after 1356 in Candia, Crete, Greece. He was en route to the Holy Land. He was buried in Candia.

    Sir Patrick Dunbar was the son of Sir Alexander Dunbar.1 He married Isabel Randolph, daughter of Thomas Randolph.2 He died in 1356 at Candia, Crete, Greece, enroute to the Holy Land.1 He died in 1356, Candia, Crete, en route to the Holy Land, with other issue (including a daughter Agnes, married John Maitland.2

Cross 1346 fought against the English at Neville's and alongside the French at their defeat by the English under the Black Prince at Poitiers 1356.2
