About Sir Robert Gosnold III, Esquire

Robert Gosnold III, Esquire was born in 1534 in Swilland, Suffolk, England. He was the son of Robert Gosland II (b. c. 1512 at Otly, Suffolk, d. 1559) and Mary Vesey (b. c.1516 in Hadleigh, Suffolk).

Robert married Ursula Naunton (1545-1615), daughter of Sir William Naunton (1506-bef. 1557) and Elizabeth Wingfied (c. 1520-1530 d. 1592).

Ursula's maternal grandparents were Sir Anthony Wingfield of Letheringham, Suffolk and Lady Elizabeth de Vere Wingfield.

Robert Gosnold III and his wife Ursula had eleven children:

1...Robert 2...Anthony 3...John 4...Thomas 5...Mary 6...Dorothy 7...Ursula 8...Anne 9...Elizabeth 10..Richard 11..Edmund

Robert was the uncle of Captain Bartholomew Gosnold and his brother Anthony. Their father was Anthony, brother of Robert. Bartholomew was vice admiral of the London Merchants fleet of three ships that sailed to Virginia on December 20, 1606, arriving in April, 1607. He is considered a primary force in the colonization of Virginia, having obtained a charter for the Virginia Company from King James I to settle Virginia. Unfortunately, he died on August 22, 1607, four months after arrival in Jamestown from malaria. His brother Anthony drowned, along with a small party from the Jamestown settlement who were attempting to cross the James River to Hog Island in a storm in 1609.

Otley Hall, Suffolk County, as seen in the photos at the right was the ancestral home of the Gosnold family. From this area, many of the early Virginia colonists were recruited by Captain Bartholomew to sail to Jamestown.
