Discussion

  •   Since Thomas Monck (who married as his first wife Frances Plantagenet) was still living in 1564, it would seem to me that this information (i.e., his marriage to Frances Plantagenet, daughter of Arthur Plantagenet) is factual.  Of course, he "could have lied," but I would think his other contemporaries would have called him out if he was lying.  Also, as an FYI, the 1564 Visitation shows all of Thomas Monck's children to be by his first wife Frances Plantagenet with the only exception being his daughter Dorothy.   The later 1620 Visitation continues to show the Monck-Plantagenet marriage with Thomas Monck who married Elizabeth Smith being a grandson of Thomas Monck & Frances Plantagenet. • Generations A2 through A6 of this pedigree (the Monck/Monk family) can also be found, in more detail, in Vivian's edition of the visitations of Devon, available for download at the BYU Library website. Vivian's Devon also contains a pedigree of Basset of Umberleigh, which confirms that Sir Arthur Basset was a half-brother of Anthony Monck. There are also Drake pedigrees in Vivian's Devon, as well as Vivian's Cornwall visitations (also available at BYU), which may support a relationship of Drake to Monck or Basset.
