About Sir Thomas de Lathom, II

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LDCC-2GQ

"The issue of Sir Thomas were Thomas, son and heir, Edward, S. P. (Alius Thome de Lathom Militis Junior. June 1377. Lyme deeds) and Isabel, afterwards Lady Stanley, issue by the marriage with Jane Venables in the Pedigrees of the Herald's College, but more probably sprung from that with Isabel de Pilkington.3"

Sir Thomas de Lathom Bodine (Ancestry of Dorothea Poyntz), says Joan is not mother of Isabel; but Magna Charta Sureties insists it is. So does Plantagenet Ancestry. He was born at of Lathom and Knowsley, Lancashire, England. He married Joan Venables, daughter of Sir Hugh Venables and Katherine Haughton, circa 1364; They had 2 sons (Thomas & Edward) and 4 daughters (Margaret, Isabel, Cecily, & Katherine).2 Sir Thomas de Lathom died before 20 March 1382 at Knowsley, Lancashire, England.

from http://tsgf.pbworks.com/f/Latham+of+Knowsley+and+Whiston.pdf (pg.3):

The Stanley (of Alderly) papers make claim in a descent of "Latham of Latham" as "Sir Thomas as "Lord of Latham and Knowsley", husband of "Isabella Venables", brother of Edward of Latham of Parbold and dying in 1384. Sir Thomas' daughter and heir is shown here as Isabella, wife of Sir John Stanley (died 1413) and then of Sir Geoffrey Worsley. Sir Oskatel Latham is identified as a base son of Sir Thomas by Mary Oskatel and is called ancestor to the Latham's of Earlham.

There is no doubt that "Seacombe" is describing the same branch of the Latham's. First he carefully details the descent from Thomas Lathom to Sir Thomas his heir in 1370 and then shows, not only that there is evidence for the existence of the illigitimate Sir Oskatel, but that Sir Thomas was succeded in 1382 by a ligitimate son and heir, Thomas. This Thomas died in 1383 and was himself suceeded in all the main Lathom estates by a posthumous, but legitimate daughter Ellen, who was sued for possession by Isabel Stanley, claiming an entail."

From Miscellanea Palatina, 1850:

Sir Thomas Lathom of Lathom, Knight, son and heir (confounded in Vincent's pedigree with the Sir Oskell of Bishop Stanley's version of the legend),^ made settlement of Lathom, 49 Edward III (enrolled in 51 Edward III), and died Richard 11, 1382.
From the Inquisition of 1383, cited afterwards, it appears that he married Isabel, daughter of Roger de Pilkington; and from a later Inquisition of 1385 (March G, 8 Pi. II), it appears that he married, secondly, Joanna or Jane, who is identified in the Records of the Herald's College as Jane, daughter of Hugh Venables of Kinderton. The same Inquisition states that Sir Thomas was imbecile for three months before his death, on which event his widow Jane, then enceinte, sent his body for burial at Burscough Priory, without j)ricst or other attendance, and married her previous paramour, Roger Fazackcrley, in conjunction with whom she the former of which was held by Sir Robert de Lathom, jointly with Catherine Lady Lathom his wife. Thomas de Lathom, their son and heir, was aged twenty-four years at the time of the Inquisition, and of course was born in or before 1400. The Render for Lathom xs*, as in 1212, claimed dower on "Wrightington, which was put to award in 7 Richard 11.

  • In 1385 he married Isabel Lathom, heir to the extensive lands of Sir Thomas Lathom (great grandson of Humphrey VI De Bohun) in south-west Lancashire. The marriage took place despite the opposition of John of Gaunt and gave Stanley the sort of wealth and financial security he could never have hoped to have had as the younger son in his own family.[4] Stanley had four sons, John, Henry, Thomas and Ralph as well as two daughters.[5] .... etc.
