  • X. William10 Wentworth, of Wentworth-Woodhouse, who was married, first, in 1288 to Dionysia, daughter of Peter de Rotherfield, by whom he had only two sons, viz.—
    • 1. WILLIAM11, of whom hereafter, and
    • 2. John11, who married Alice, daughter and heir of John Bissett, Esq., of North Elmsall, in Yorkshire, and thus acquired that important estate, He died, however, without at least surviving issue, and bequeathed that estate to his nephew John12, the younger son of his elder brother William11, of whom hereafter.
  • Their mother Dionysia died shortly after the birth of her younger son John11, and their father William10 married, secondly, Lucy, daughter of Sir Adam Newmarch, but had no issue by her; and himself died in 1295, in the lifetime of his father and only seven years after his first marriage. On his father's death, in 1308-9, the family estate reverted to his eldest son

  • IX. William Wentworth, of Wentworth-Woodhouse, who married Beatrice, daughter of Gilbert Thakel, of Yorkshire, and died 2 Edward II., 1308-9, having had issue, two sons, viz: —
    • 1. William, of whom hereafter, and
    • 2. Richard, who bacame a Prebendary of St. Paul's, and in 1338 was elevated the Bishopric of London, and in the same year, being in the reign of Edward III., was made High Chancellor of England. This is the first recorded instance of the official dignities what were afterwards common enough in the family. So far as the State was concerned, his position was second only to that of the King himself; and the Bishopric of London, at that time holding even higher rank that it does now, was exceeded only by the Archbishoprics of Canterbury and York. Bishop and Chancellor Wentworth did not, however, long enjoy his dignities, as he died in 1339, the year secceeding his elevation. The line was continued through his elder brother —

II., married Isabella, daughter and co-heiress of Wm. de Pollington (Quarter III.), and their son William maried Isabella, daughter and coheiress of Walter de Tinsley. The crest was a griphon argent; and Thomas Wentworth, who married Margaret, the heiress of Gascoigne, and died in 1587, bequeaths to his heir, his chain of gold and gold ring, whereon is engraven his crest, badge, and cognizance, and a dozen of silver spoons, with gryphons' heads at the ends. From this line proceeded the Earl of Strafford. The crest is given as a gryphon argent. __________________________
