Notes

  • There was presumably an estate at STANLEY in the late 12th century when there was mention of Adam of Stanley. (fn. 81) There was certainly an estate there c. 1200 when Adam de Audley, lord of Horton, gave Stanley to Adam of Stanley's son William. In 1272 the estate was held by Walter of Stanley, alive in 1282 but dead by 1285. His heir was his son William, who was succeeded probably in the early 1320s by his son John (d. c. 1330). John's heir was his son William, the forester of Wirral forest (Ches.). In 1359 the estate was styled a manor. (fn. 82) William was succeeded in 1360 by his son, another William (d. 1398). His heir was his son 'William, knighted c. 1400, who took part in the rebellion of Henry Percy in 1403 but was later pardoned. SIR WILLIAM WAS SUCCEEDED IN 1428' by his grandson William Stanley (d. 1466). William's son and heir, another William, knighted c. 1484, died in 1512 and was succeeded by his son William, knighted in 1513. (fn. 83) That Sir William, alive in 1528-9, was succeeded by his son William (d. 1546). William's heir was his brother Roland, knighted in 1553. (fn. 84) Sir Roland was succeeded in 1613 by his great-grandson William Stanley, and William in 1644 or 1645 by his son William. In 1652 William leased the manor, probably as part of an arrangement which led to its sale to Thomas Fernihaugh in 1660. (fn. 85)

      • There is some confusion over this and the next generation. Ormerod shows this Sir William as possibly first married to Mary Savage before being married to Alice Houghton, with uncertainty as to who was mother of his children, with his son/successor being the Sir William who married Agnes Grosvenor. We are following 'The House of Stanley' (which appeared to have considered Ormerod's work and expanded on it) & Visitation which both show 2 different generations although this does raise some concern regarding the age when this William's son William is shown as having had children of his own. As indicated above, we may revise this in due course. It is noted that some web sites show this William as having married Alice Houghton and his son as having married a Savage.

William married Margaret de Houghton, daughter of Sir William de Houghton Knight and Katherine de Torond, about 1376.

~J. Horace Round in V.2 of Peerage and Pedigree, 1970 reprint of the 1910 work, pages 35-36, tells us he "married the Hooton heiress, and founded the Stanleys of Hooton" and that he had a brother, Sir John de Stanley, who married "the Lathom heiress and was ancestor of the Earls of Derby."
~A Genealogy of the Southworths (Southards), by Samuel G. Webber (1905) (p 433) calls him William de Stanley, Esq., of Stanley, Storeton, and Hooton.

• Background Information. 721

Sir William de Stanley, knight, was Lord of Stanley and Storeton in Wirral, Cheshire. He was aged 30 on 16 June 1398 and died 2 Feb 1428. He was just a child when he married, sometimes around 1376, Margaret de Houghton. Due to this marriage he secceeded to Hooton in 1396, and in 1397, he received "a grant of a life annunity of 100/- upon being retained for service for life." In Fed 1399, he was commissioned to raise an army of eighty-eight archers, which he was to take to Ireland in service of the King. He was likely a sympathizer of Henry, Earl of Lancashire, and received an arrest warrent on 15 May 1399. His name again appears in records as conservator of the peace in the Cheshire hundred of Wirral by 28 Jan 1400. By 22 Sep 1401, he is listed as a knight who had rendered homage.

He surved his brother as Lord Deputy in Ireland in 1401, and helped build defensed against Owain Glydwr and his Welsh rebels in the summer of 1402. His post mortem inquistion was dated 6 Henry VI (1427-1428).
