Sir Wyndham Spencer Portal, 1st Bt. was born on 22 July 1822.
- Son of John Portal and Elizabeth Drummond.
- Married Mary Jane Hicks-Beach, daughter of William Hicks-Beach, on 19 April 1849.
- Died on 14 September 1905 at age 83.3
- Educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England and at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.
- Gained the rank of Captain between 1842 and 1865 in the service of the Hampshire Yeomanry.
- Held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) and of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hampshire.
- Vice-chairman and chairman of the London and South Western Railway between 1875 and 1900.3
- He was created 1st Baronet Portal, of Malshanger, Church Oakley, co. Southampton [U.K.] on 11 March 1901.
