About Solomon Leonard

Solomon who married Huldah Hodge was not the Solomon born to Solomon Leonard and Joanna Washburn in Bridgewater, Mass. That Solomon married Huldah Orcutt, his memorial's here. Betsey Leonard was that Solomon's daughter, her memorial's here.

Because this Solomon & his wife Huldah Hodge were incorrectly merged with the Massachusetts couple, their parentage is uncertain: Was Solomon of NY descended from James Leonard, Iron Worker? Or related to the Leonards of Bradford Co., Penn.? Was Huldah related to Curtis Hodges of Washington Co., NY, or to Abraham Close Hodge who was b. in Pompey in 1806? Solomon's son-in-law Truman 2nd md. Sarah/Sally Ann Smith b. 1802 who'd been married to "his uncle Abraham Leonard," was he Solomon's brother? Why did Solomon and his family live in towns in the Central New York Military Tract? Some of the Leonards who fought in the Revolutionary War in NY are listed here.

Was Solomon new to the area? They moved around a bit in the 1790s: Son Abram was born in Schoharie Co. in 1794, daughter Lucretia was born in Washington Co. or Saratoga Co. in 1795 and son Curtis in Chenango Co. in 1797. In 1799, Solomon was assessed a 2¢ tax in Oxford, Chenango Co. By the 1800 Census, Solomon's family was living in Pompey, Onondaga Co. and included both a male born between 1756-1774 and one born before 1755.

In 1802 Solomon was assessed 10¢ in Pompey, in 1803 25¢. Land fraud was rife in that time and area: Solomon was mentioned in cases of the Court of Common Pleas of Onondaga Co. in Feb., March, May, July, Sept, December 1808. Daughter Mabel was born in Fabius in 1808, in Feb. 1809 Solomon "confest judgm. to Benj. Lewis jr. for $.75" The family was in Fabius at the 1810 Census. That Census recorded the oldest male as born between 1766 and 1784. Based on 1800 and 1810 Census data, Solomon was born between 1766 and 1774. We know Huldah's birth date from her headstone: July 21, 1768.

On May 2, 1817, David Benson of Pompey sold Solomon of Fabius forty-one acres and ninety-five rods of land; the total cost was six hundred dollars to be paid in one hundred dollar installments annually. The mortgage was cancelled on or before a recording date of May 29, 1833. On Sept. 4, 1819, Peter Himrod of Hector sold 7 acres of land to Solomon and Huldah of Hector; the land had been bought from James Smith at a sheriff's sale. The deal was signed by Solomon and Huldah made her mark. Witnesses were sons Abraham and Solomon Jr. Solomon Sr. and Huldah appeared and executed indenture.

At the 1820 US Census the family was still in Hector. One immediate neighbor was the Joel Campbell family into which Mary Leonard would marry, another was Ebenezer King. Other key neighbors on the Censuses included: Curtis Hodges Sr. on the 1800 Census (Huldah's brother?), Curtis Hodges Jr. on the 1810 Census (Huldah's nephew?), and Isaiah Grinnell also on the 1810 Census (Ezra's father). By the 1820 Census Curtis Hodges Sr. and Jr. were both living in Painted Post, Steuben County.

On March 7, 1825, Solomon sold land in Hector in the military tract containing 61.27 acres for $117. Solomon Leonard, Jr. witnessed the sale. On April 23, 1825, Solomon Leonard appeared in the Court of Common Pleas as a grantor. By the enumeration date of the 1825 NY Census, Huldah had become head of the household. One male death had occurred during the recording period of the 1825 Mortality Schedule: Solomon's.

On Apr. 28, 1827, the sheriff seized land and tenements of Solomon's heirs under a Writ of the Court of Common Pleas and sold their property at auction. The heirs listed on the Writ were:

• son Curtis Hodge Leonard, who was later listed on the Tax Rolls in Bradford Co., Penn. beginning in 1828. • son Abraham 2d [2d because there was an older Abraham Leonard living in the area] • son Elisha (b. ca 1800: he wasn't on the 1800 Census [3 of Solomon's sons were not on the 1800 Census] but Elisha was listed with a birth period of 1795-1800 on the 1810 Census.) Was this Elisha in 1830 and 1840? • dau. Lucretia, wife of Ezra Grinnell • dau. Mary, wife of Benoni Campbell • dau. Mabel, wife of Truman B. Warner • grandson Henry Stringham, age 14 yrs old. • grandson Solomon Leonard Stringham, age 8 yrs old.

Once the legal affairs were settled, Huldah and their surviving children removed to Wells, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. Solomon and Huldah had at least two children who weren't listed as surviving heirs:

• a daughter, b. 1785-1794 per the 1800 US Census, either removed from the area or possibly died before 1820: Her sons were apparently living with the Leonards in 1820 and 1825. She was the mother of Henry Stringham (b. 1813) and Solomon Leonard Stringham (b. 1819).

• Solomon Jr, b. 1785-1790, d. aft. the March 7, 1825 land transaction he witnessed for his parents. There was a Solomon Leonard listed on the 1830 Wells, Bradford Co., Penn. township Tax Assessment rolls: That year, John U. Frost "transferred acreage" to a Solomon Leonard. Also listed: Joseph Holly: 10 acres assessed to a Solomon Leonard. In 1831 that Solomon Leonard transferred acreage back to John U. Frost. In 1840 there was a Solomon Leonard 40-50 yrs old in Virginia twp, Coshocton Co., Ohio. Was this his widow, Silva who d. in 1867? In 1860 a Sylva Leonard (b. 1800 NY) was living with Huldah Wilkinson (b. 1824 NY) close to Sybil Hughes (b. 1829 Penn.) who had a daughter named Sylva. By 1865 the town was named "Oblong." Were Huldah and Sybil daughters of Solomon and Sylva, along with Temperance Leonard Brownfield who named her son Solomon? •.¸¸.•*¨*•..¸¸.•*¨*•..¸¸.•*¨*•..¸¸.•*¨*•..¸¸.•*¨*•..¸¸.•
