About Sophia Maria Daley
Sophia Irwin married Major John Brown about 1825, and they lived in India. They had one son John, born about 1826. Major Brown took part in the Battle of Seringapatam. He died in India about 1827.
Sophia then set out to return to Scotland in 1828, but the baby John became sick and she went ashore at Durban. There about 1829 she married a Scotsman, Mr Hepburn, and they had a daughter Annie Margaret born 1830. They lived in Africa until Mr Hepburn died of T.B about 1832.
Sophia then returned to Scotland about 1832 and learned that Allen's Bank in which she had her money invested had failed. She then went to Wales where she kept a boarding house. Sergeant Daley was one of her lodgers.
Sophia married Sergeant Daley about 1834 and their children Peter, Michael and Sophia grew up with Annie Margaret Hepburn and John Brown. Later John Brown became a musician and at a Government Ball somewhere (possibly Canada) broke a blood vessel and died.
Sergeant Daley in charge of 25 Convicts left Carnavon with his wife and family on the Hydrabad for Australia about 1848. He then went to Tasmania where he was given a grant of land at Fluherty Point on the Huon River. Sergeant Daley was R.C. and some friction occured about religion with Annie Margaret who then went to Hobart where she was employed at a City Shop. Here she met Joseph Page and they were married at Holy Trinity Church, Hobart in 1851.
