Stanislaus Wachowiak Meets a Tragic Death at Fire - Early Sunday Morning

Fearing that he might be turned out in the cold if he attempted to enter the home of his parents early yesterday morning, Stanislaus Wachowiak, a young man of twenty years, preferred refuge and sleep in a lonely summer kitchen of a neighbor at 977 East King Street, in which only a few short hours later he was burned to death. The body was picked up by the firemen who were called to the scene shortly before 3 o'clock in the morning to extinguish the fire in the burning structure. That the unfortunate young man had bean drinking quite heavily during the evening was admitted by several friends who met Wachowiak Saturday evening, and undoubtedly this contributed to his sad death. The last person who saw and spoke to Wachowiak was Julius Ostrowski, a companion of the deceased young man. The two had spent the evening "up-town" and visited several saloons in their course of the evening's enjoyment. They arrived at Ostrowski's home shortly after midnight and fearing that he might not be allowed to enter his own home, he asked permission to sleep in the summer kitchen of his friends' home, as the lateness of the hour prevented him from going to his room at the Bundy farm on Homer road. Stanislaus Wachowiak was employed as a farm hand on the Bundy farm, below Sugar Loaf. The small quarters were made to accommodate young Wachowiak and a fire was built in the stove. Julius Ostrowski retired to his room where he soon was asleep. Not until the flames pierced the roof of the summer kitchen were the occupants of the home aroused. The entire south portion of the frail structure was enveloped in flames. The sad end of affairs has seriously affected the young man's mother, Mrs. John Wachowiak, 959 East King Street.
