Few reference books in the genealogical field stand the test of time well enough that a second edition is called for nearly a half century later. One that does is Stella Pickett Hardy's Colonial Families of the Southern States of America, published in 1911. A second, largely revised edition, containing corrections and additions by the author, has been issued by Southern Book Co. (Baltimore, Md). Miss Hardy deals with 66 Virginia families established the United States before the formation of the original 13 states, and whose members are represented in the descent of thousands of persons over the country. Because many records were destroyed in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, tracing southern genealogy presents many difficulties not found in other sections of the nation, and volumes such as Miss Hardy's are particularly valuable.”
