About Stephen Laundy Ingham
Stephen came to Adelaide from England in 1838. He was 3 and the ship was called the Eden. At about 17 he came to Bendigo with a mate to have go at gold mining. He did that for a short while until he obtained work with a number of butchers who employed him as a slaughterman. In the late 1850s he started his own butcher shop. Over the years he also had a go at owning a taxi and owning a pub. He retired in about 1899. After that he was still speculating in mining shares of companies in the district.
Obituary
Another old district pioneer, Mr. Stephen Laundy Ingham, passed away at his residence in Church-street, Eaglehawk, on Saturday morning, at the age of 80 years. Until about five months ago the deceased gentleman enjoyed good health. He, how ever, contracted plourisy and pneumonia, and despite careful medical treatment his condition gradually became worse, and expired as stated. At the age of three he landed in Adelaide in 1838. coming to Australia from England in the ship Eden.
After residing in the sister State for about 14 years he came to Bendigo in comp-any with Mr. Joseph Thomas, who now resides in the vicinity of Lightning Hill, Eaglehawk, and settled here. in 1852. After working for a short period on the alluvial diggings he was employed as a slaughterman boy a number of butchers in and around the Bendigo and Eaglehawk districts. Whilst still in the fifties he commenced business as a butcher at Elysian Flat, and later carried on v, butchering business in Eaglehawk, Spring Gully and Sydney Flat. He was also at one time a cab ,proprietor and hotelkeeper at Sailor Gully. He retired from business about 16 years ago, and lived privately in Eaglehawk. In. late: years he was a speculator in mining, and held shares in several of the prominent mines in the district at the time of his death. He leaves a widow and family of two daughters (Mrs. Johnston, of Sailor's Gully, and Mrs. Flett, of Sydney Flat). There are also eight grandchildren /two of whom are on active service), and nine great-grandchildren.
