Stienie Botha (1945 - 2007)

Brief overview:

Stienie (61), and her partner, Ouboet Venter (53), were attacked on their smallholding in Hartbeespoort Dam area, outside Pretoria on 25th September 2007. Four perpetrators invaded the house at around 01:30, had gained entry by breaking down the back door. One of the attackers had a pistol, while the others were armed with a knife, screwdriver and spoon. The armed perpetrator shot Stienie in the chest. (She passed away from her injuries in hospital on 6th November 2007).

The couple was then tied up, and one of the attackers removed Stienie's rings. Each time Ouboet attempted to help Stienie, who was laying very still, they kicked him and hit him across the head with the firearm. They then removed all his clothes and forced him to lie on the floor.

He and a friend, known as Mariska, who was also inside the house, were later locked in separate rooms. Before Venter managed to untie himself and break down the door, the robbers had stripped the house and fled in his car. Ouboet managed to untie himself and seek help at a neighbouring smallholding.

Stienie, who was in critical condition, was taken to the high care unit of Montana Private Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on 6th November.

No-one has been arrested.

“Sy was die hele tyd in die waakeenheid van die Montana Private Hospitaal,” het sy gesê.
“Stienie het vir twee dae met ons gepraat. Dis toe dat sy gesê het sy gaan ophou rook as sy uit die hospitaal uitkom.
“Die dokters het probeer om haar aan die lewe te hou, maar die man wat haar geskiet het, het te naby aan haar gestaan.
“Haar long het heeltemal geskeur. Haar liggaam wou ook nie meer die antibiotika hê nie.
“Ons gaan haar baie mis,” het Annatjie Botha gesê.

Mrs. Stienie Botha (61) said that when she comes out of hospital, she stops smoking cigarettes.
Her partner, Mr. Uncle Venter (53), 5 children, 22 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren hoped she would come home, but the day before yesterday her body gave in.
At the end of September, Botha and Venter were attacked in their manor house in the Hartbeespoortdam area by four armed robbers.
They moved into the house the previous week.
One of the robbers had a pistol while the other three had a knife, a screwdriver and a spoon respectively.
Botha was shot in the chest.
Her sister, Ms. Annatjie Botha, yesterday in tears told how they hoped Botha would come home.
"She was in the intensive care unit of the Montana Private Hospital the whole time," she said.
"Stienie spoke to us for two days. That's when she said she was going to stop smoking when she got out of the hospital.
"The doctors tried to keep her alive, but the man who shot her was standing too close to her.
“Her lung was completely torn. Her body no longer wanted the antibiotics either.
"We are going to miss her a lot," said Annatjie Botha.
