The oldest child born to Matt and Sanna her brother Mathias only lived two weeks in 1906. After that loss, the young family moved back to Finland where Matt Victor was born. Her father returned to the US in 1909, followed by his wife and children a few months later.

The morning they were leaving, Hilda recalled kneeling at a bench with her cousin to eat their breakfast. They lived in the mining community of Montreal Wisconsin until enough had been saved to purchase farm land in the town of Oulu in Bayfield County.

She married Everett Johnson, son of Gustaf Trupukka and his fourth wife Serafiia Wakkuri who had relocated from Michigan's Upper Peninsula in 1914.
