The family were frequent visitors at the estate of Merton, home of Lord Nelson and Emma Hamilton, and Emma was often called upon to help educate and raise the couple's daughters. After Susannah's death, Nelson and Emma's daughter, Horatia, was called upon to live with the remaining family, moving from occupying the same role at Susannah's sister, Kitty Matcham's home.
