Biography

Susannah Snow

  • Birth 1610 Brookehouse, Chedulton [sic: = Cheddleton], Staffordshire, England[6]
  • Death 1666 St Clements, Charles, Maryland[6]
  • Marriage 21 Sep 1629 Lancashire, England[7] [8][9]

Susannah Snow Gerrard was born in 1610 as the daughter of Justinian John Snow of Brookehouse Manor, Cheddleton, Staffordshire, England. Her father has been described as a "yeoman farmer" but clearly he was a substantial land-owner and may be considered "landed gentry" in that area. His son, Justinian, joined the British Navy as an officer and is said to have risen to the rank of "Admiral". Susannah's mother was "Dame" Judith Hill of Wolverley, Worcestershire, England. Susannah had at least 4 brothers and sisters including Justinian and Marmaduke Snow, who emigrated to Maryland in the 1630s.

Susanna Snow married Thomas Gerrard, a surgeon, on 21 Sep. 1629, in Lancashire, England. They had 10 children: Temperance[1], Justinian,[1] Thomas, Frances,[1] Susannah, Jane, Elizabeth, John, Anne,[1] and Mary. The Gerrard family were Roman Catholic while Susannah and her family were Protestants. Her father, John Justinian Snow may not of approved of this match because in his Will, probated October 26, 1631, he left Susanna and her husband "a French Crown". France, it should be recalled, was at that time a Roman Catholic country and enemy of officially-Protestant England.[2]

Susannah was the sister of Marmaduke, Justinian and Abel Snow, all of whom were early settlers in Maryland (none of these three Snow brothers had issue as far as can be determined). Susannah came to America with her children in 1638, joining her husband at Saint Clements Manor, Saint Marys Hundred, Maryland, on the Potomac River. Thomas Gerrard's plantation records are the only ones still in existence. Because of these records we know today how the plantation was run in the 1600's.

On October 18, 1650, Susannah and her husband obtained a patent for 1,000 acres of land on the south-west side of the Potomac (in Northampton County, Virginia colony). Dr. Gerrard named among the headrights his wife Susannah, and 5 of his children: Susannah, Temperance,[1] Frances,[1] Justinian,[1] and John Gerrard. This has led to confusion with later genealogists claiming the family only emigrated from England in 1650 whereas, as shown in these profiles (see especially Justinian Snow, they were well established in Saint Marys Hundred, Maryland, by late 1638.

It is said that Thomas Gerrard was for a long time a councilor in Saint Marys, but that he was finally banished from Maryland for taking part in the insurrection of Governor Josiah Fendall in 1659 / 1660 [when Cromwell's Puritan government fell in England & Charles II was restored to the British throne]. This may have happened but since Fendall himself was merely disenfranchised, it is unlikely any such order was enforced. It is more likely that, after Susannah died at St. Clements Manor in 1666, a grieving widower, Dr. Thomas Gerrard moved to Westmoreland County, Virginia, where one of his daughters lived (she had married Thomas Speke).[3][4][5]

Susannah Snow Gerrard died at St. Clements Manor, St. Marys Hundred, Maryland, in 1666. She is buried in the Gerrard Family Cemetery, Coltons Point, St. Mary's, Maryland next to her husband who was buried there after his death in Westmoreland Co., Virginia, in 1673.[1]
