William is still alive in 1820. The 1820 census Master William “McElvin” is listed as head of the household and is believed to be the free white male listed as age 26 to 44. This range tracks with the birth year listed as 1785.
Those in the household are listed as 11 that includes 3 slaves. The free white persons are William, discussed above, 1 female aged 45 and over (who is this?), 1 female aged 26 to 44 (possibly his wife Susan), 1 female under 10 and 4 males 15 years and under.
William and his wife Susannah recorded in Bryan County Deed Book D dated 8 Sep 1826 “Susannah McElween, Adm. of William McElween, bond with Edmund Burnside and Andrew Bird.”
2nd. Susannah married Edmund Burnsides and they had 2 known children. The census record for Edmund Burnside is included (in case they were married then). In the 1830 census, Edmund Burnside is listed as head of the household. There are 11 free white persons listed and 2 slaves for a total of 13 persons. The details on the free white persons are: 1 male age 20 to 30, 1 female age 30 to 40, 1 female and 1 male aged 15 to 19 and 7 children under age 15.[8]
