BACKGROUND
A growing theory is the parents of This Elizabeth who with Emanuel Harvey, of Bryan County raised their children in Bryan County Georgia may have been Swedish merchants doing business in Charleston. It's interesting that Portuguese is mixed in the mtDNA with the Swedish which could track to a merchant, perhaps from the French West Indies: possibilities being a) St. Barthelemy [https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=St.+Barthelemy] France sold island to Sweden in 1784; b) St. Thomas [https://stcroixsource.com/1999/06/26/french-immigrants-saint-barthe...] and c) St. Domingue [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Domingue]
There are 3 Gedmatches of interest: (Wikitree IDs)
- Amanda (Moyer) Torrey: Gedmatch ID# UZ9855520 mtDNA ftDNA# H1-C16239T.
- Paul Sorenson: Gedmatch ID# HE4401353 mtDNA ftDNA ID #: H1-C16239T I found Paul on perfect matches through Mitochondrial comparisons in FamilyTreeDNA. Paul and I had 0 Distance with the gedmatch shown below. According to Famity Tree DNA, this many matches show the connection is no coincidence. Paul's maternal side is interesting since until the 20th Century, all descendants were for Paul from Sweden .
- Claude Thobie: EL7593937 a strong colonial atDNA match with both me and Paul with no paper trail to either Colonial U.S. or Sweden.
It is possible that as there are no direct ancestors as yet on a path, the MCRA that connects the 3 of us could be the Mariner that makes us 1st cousins?
Clues
According to Paul, his family has no knowledge of any interaction between that family nor colonial America; however we will use his most distant ancestor on the maternal lines being Catharina Persdotter https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Persdotter-7748 for clues.
1. I invite an atDNA comparison between Paul Sorensen and Claude Thobie: EL7593937. I've posted my findings as the three of us have important results.
2. atDNA can only reach to mid 18th century, so it is fortunate both Paul and my most distant maternal ancestor are probably the same. With Paul and my atDNA match and our mtDNA distance being 0, we have a high probability of finding our MRCA within the next generation which means that Catharina and Elisabeth could be sisters or more likely 1st cousins.
3. Claude's match adds the probability that the Persdotters were Mariners and Claude's ancestors colonized the French West Indies (Caribbean)
- St. Barthelmy: was sold to Sweden in 1784:
- St. Thomas: French immigrated from St. Barthelmy to St. Thomas (https://stcroixsource.com/1999/06/26/french-immigrants-saint-barthe...)
- St. Domingue: was a French Colony from 1659 to 1804 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Domingue)
AUTOSOMAL COMPARISONS ON GEDMATCH:
NOTE: There is a controversy around using 3.0 cm to compare matches. However this is only a problem when finding a match between just a few cMs. It becomes more relevant when the findings reveal many chromosomes in common as seen below. It's easier when the members are all using Geni and MyHeritage because the validity of small cMs are not in question. They're worked into an algorithm. For Gedmatch we are looking for 6th and 7th Cousins which are found by matching to 3 cMs.

As we don't yet know who Elizabeth's family is, we cannot clarify the path between her and her mtDNA. We know she is Susannah McElveen/Burnside/Bragg's mother. Susannah was widowed at least twice, but as I'm following a very specific line for the mtDNA, the focus is on the relevant McElveens.

mtDNA: Mitochondrial DNA. Genetic distance is the term used to describe the number of differences or mutations between two sets of Y-chromosome DNA or mitochondrial DNA test results. A genetic distance of zero means that there are no differences in the two results and there is an exact match. With a distance of 0, there would be a 50% chance Paul and I share a common maternal ancestor within the last 5-16 generations (or about 125-400 years). According to our autosomal matching we have a strong match probably 5th to 9th generations.

SWEDEN IN THE AMERICAN COLONIES
Sweden had a presence in the SouthEastern American Colonial Coast:
"Sweden had to wait 130 years for their next American colony, the island of St Barthélemy in the Caribbean, given by France in return for trading rights in Gothenburg. However, modern scholarship does not consider the intervening period a hiatus, rather ‘Sweden’s interest in the American world continued unabated, as evidenced by several plans to found colonies in the Caribbean or on the South American continent. At the same time, economic ties, both direct and indirect, were growing between Sweden and the Americas’ (Schnakenbourg, p. 229)." BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY FOR THE CHILDREN of EMANUEL AND ELIZABETH HARVEY
For decades this family was wrongfully listed on unsourced family trees as Richard and Elizabeth Harvey from Albermarle who eventually moved to Georgia and had 10 children. Apparently, the reality is that Elizabeth m. Emanuel Harvey and settled with the following 5 children in Bryan County Georgia.
* Nancy Mary Martin (Will), Mary "Polly" Martin (Probate), m. James Martin. Polly m. James Martin. Notification to Revise Nancy's profile sent 27 Sept. 2023.
- 2. William Harvey (Will & Probate), living in GA in 1852. William Harvey, "still living in the State of Georgia" [William Harvey] (William Harvey m. Nancy) Notification of change to profile sent to Manager of profile on 27 Sept 2023.
* 3. Elizabeth Martha Sheffield (Harvey) intermarried with John Sheffield (died Baker, Florida) . Elizabeth m. Sheffield (Will) m. John Sheffield.

* 4. Rebecca Davis DeVaughn (Will) b. about 1782-83 m. 1st John Walter Davis then 2nd Devaun or DeVaughn)
* 5. Susannah (Harvey) McElveen Burnside Bragg (Susannah McElvene (spelled as on Will), Susan Bragg (Probate).

1830 - It is possible that Elizabeth could be the 70 to 80 year old female living with Walter Davis in the 1830 census for Jackson County, Florida however, more research is needed.
BURIAL AND PROBATE
Wikitree has definitively shown how the children were badly conflated. They have found two separate Elizabeths who married two separate Harveys being: 1) Richard Harvey and 2) Emanuel Harvey. Emanuel Harvey's Will has surfaced and was found to be the father of the 5 children named in his Will that match Rebecca DeVaughn's probated estate and are the focus in this study.John Timothy Davis, Sr. Esq., Elizabeth's grandson by her daughter Rebecca Davis DeVaughn, was the administrator of the estates of both Elizabeth Harvey and Rebecca Davis DeVaughn, each probated in 1852-1853 in Jackson County, Florida. Elizabeth who is named as his grandmother died in this state about the year 1835. Rebecca Davis DeVaughn who is named as his mother lately died in Calhoun County That at the time of her death her home place of abode was with your petitioner John Timothy Davis, Sr. Esq. in Jackson County.[3][2] John Davis stated that Elizabeth died intestate, and Rebecca died without a Will (intestate). Elizabeth's children are named in WILL FOR EMANUEL HARVEY and the 1852-1853 probate records.
