About Susanna Wadding

Susanna (Rev. Thomas Willats) was born about 1635, probably in England, and died 1717 in Jamestown, Virginia as Susannah Wadding. As a landowner in her own name as Susanna Chiles, when the widow of Walter Chiles ll, she's a Qualifying Ancestor of the Jamestowne Society.

Susannah left a Will while living at Harrow, she was a socialite and related to Loe=ord Byron and mther Mary Wollston home

Mary Page is disputed as wife of the 2nd Walter Chiles (d. 1671).

The more current thinking is that Walter Chiles, II, of Jamestown had only one wife, Susannah (unknown) Wadding, mother of his three children:

  1. Elizabeth (Chiles) Tyler
  2. Capt. Henry Chiles
  3. John Chiles

Susannah Chiles, widow of Walter, married Rev. James Waddinge, after May 15th, 1672, for on that date she received, as his (Walter’s) widow, a grant of ‘‘ 200 acres in Passbehaves for 99 years on account of buildings and improvements on the Main there, made by Walter Chiles, according to an order of the General Court of June 7th, 1638, for strengthening the Main on this side of Powhatan Swamp, by leasing it out in parcels."

GEDCOM Note

Mystery surrounds Susana, the oldest of the children of John Page of Middle Plantation for, unlike the sons, little of her is known. In early life she married Walter Chiles whom she provided a son John, & a dtr. Elizabeth. She died at an early age. The grandchildren (John and Elizabeth Tyler) & great grandchildren of this line were remembered in John Page's will. Elizabeth is the great-great grandmother of President John Tyler.

One site gives her as Mary-the Page Rosewell book & other sites-give her as Susanna which I am entering here. There seems to have been sisters Mary and Susanna Page-daughters of Col. John Page. From Cathy Martin on Ancestry.com: This from «i»The Genealogies of Kentucky Families «/i»and «i»The Register of Kentucky and The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society «/i»Vol. 1 pg 141: "Walter marr. first Mary Page-they had one son and one daughter. After her death, he marries. Susanna, they had children and after Walter's death she marr. James Waddng." "...as John Page was left only a ring in the will of Col. John Page...it is said that he received more than his sister Susanna Chiles, who married Rev. James Waddins." So, both Page sisters-Mary and Susanna evidently married Walter Chiles Jr.

  7. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Page_(planter) Mary Page, the daughter of Col. John Page, married Walter Chiles Jr., son of Col. Walter Chiles of the Virginia Governor's Council.[14] In his will of March 5, 1687, Col. John Page mentions his grandson John Chiles, as well as his "grandsonne John Tyler, sonne of my grand-daughter Elizabeth Tyler."[15] Elizabeth Chiles had married Henry Tyler of Middle Plantation, and thus became the ancestor[16] of President John Tyler.[17]
