19310 Preston Road, Dallas\ \Finman, Susan\MADISON - Susan Finman, beloved by her husband, Ted, by their daughters, Rona and Terry and their husbands, Warren and Dennis, by her grandchildren, Aliya, James and Maya, and by her many friends, died on Saturday, March 15, 2008, after a protracted battle with debilitating illnesses. Susan was born in Berlin, Germany on Dec. 11, 1928. With her family, she escaped the Nazis and came to the United States in 1939. In 1947, she graduated from Great Neck High School in New York and then attended the University of Chicago where she and Ted met and fell in love. They were married in January 1950 and received their B.A. degreesin June of that year. They came to Wisconsin in 1963, and have been here ever since. Susan has had three overlapping careers. First, as a homemaker, mother and wife. Second, even while pursuing the first, as a citizen active in supporting the liberal-progressive candidates and causes that she believed in. She served as the Dane County office manager for Congressman Robert Kastenmeier during one of his reelection campaigns, as chair of the Dane County Democratic Party, as an official in the Wisconsin primary campaign of Eugene McCarthy, and as a delegate to the tumultuous 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. Susan' s third career was as an administrator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison . She worked first in the History Department, then in the office of the Secretary of the Faculty, and then as the Secretary of the Faculty for some ten years. She and Ted retired in 1993. For the past several years, until her illnesses made it impossible, she greatly enjoyed being a volunteer tutor for 2nd and 3rd graders. A remembrance service willbe held at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday,March 18, 2008, and friends are invited to greet the family there during the hour preceding the service.
