About Suzanne Mieure
- *************************************************
Susanne (Dubois) Jones Mieure was born on July 17, 1789 in Vincennes, then a part of the Northwest Territory. She was the daughter of Toussaint Dubois Sr. (abt 1755-1816) and Jeannette "Janne" Bonneau (1772-1800).
Susanne's mother, Janne, was born in Ft. Vincennes and lived her entire life that area. Susanne was just 11-13 years old when her mother died at age 28-30 and was buried in the Old Cathedral French and Indian Cemetery located in Vincennes. Her burial site is one of the few remaining with a readable marker.
Susanne's father, Toussaint, a merchant and trader with the Indians, was born near Montreal, Quebec, New France (now Canada). He died in Illinois Territory on Mar. 1, 1816 while attempting to cross the rain swollen Little Wabash River. He too, was buried in the Old Cathedral Cemetery according to Masonic records. Unfortunately, his grave is one of 4,000+ burials in that old and historic cemetery that are no longer marked.
In 1897, 18 year old Susanne married 28 year old William Jones (1781-1819). William was born in Jefferson Co., KY, then a part of Virginia. William was the son of Edward Jones (1743-1818) and Elizabeth Keller (1749-1811).
Both of William's parents were born in Virginia and both died in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. They are buried in the Hike's Family Cemetery in Louisville.
William died in Vincennes at the age of 37 and was probably buried in the Old Cathedral Cemetery in that city. He and Susanne had six known children during their eighteen years of marriage. They were Edward Jones (1809- ?), Elizabeth Ann Jones (1813-?), Susanne Ophelia "Susan" Jones (1814-1889), Mary Jane Jones (1816-1894), Marie C. Jones and William Toussaint Jones (1819-1820).
About 1823, Susanne married Richard "Dick" Mieure (1782-1851). Richard was 41 years of age, Susanne 34. They had one child, Guillaume (William) Henri "A. J." Mieure (1824-1861). Guillaume is the French equivalent for William.
Susanne and Richard were married for less that two years. She died on Feb. 23, 1825 in Vincennes, Knox Co., Indiana at the age of 35. Their son, William, was just four months old. Her five children form her first marriage were taken in a raised by members of her first husband's family.
It is thought that Susanne, like her parents and her first husband, was buried in the old Cathedral Cemetery in a now unmarked grave.
After Susanne's death her husband, Richard, eventually married widower, Victorie Delisle Oneille (1785-aft 1850). Her parents were Charles Delisle and Madeleine Barsaloux. Victorie had at least two children from her first marriage to Joseph Francois Oneille (1758-1816).
The 1850 US Census shows Richard and Victorie, now in their 60s, living with Richard's son, William, and his family.
Susanne's second husband, Richard, died on April 13, 1851 in Lawrence Co., IL, at the age of 69. He was buried in the Lawrenceville Cemetery located in that city.
