Susanne Ophelia Ingersoll

Susanne Ophelia "Susan" (Jones) Smyth Ingersoll was born on July 17, 1789 in Vincennes, Northwest Territory (later Knox Co., Indiana). She was the daughter of William Jones (1781-1819) and Susanne Dubois (1789-1925).

Susan's father, William Jones, was born in Jefferson Co., KY in 1781 when Kentucky was still part of Virginia. Statehood for Kentucky was not achieved until 1792.

William was the son of Edward Jones (1743-1818) and Elizabeth Kellar (1749-1811). Both of William's parents were born in Virginia and both died in Jefferson Co., KY. They are buried in Hikes Cemetery located in that county.

Susan's mother, Susanne, was born in Vincennes when it was part of the Northwest Territory. She was the daughter of Toussaint Dubois (1751-1816) and Anne Jeanette "Janne" Bonneau (1770-1800).

Toussaint was born in Montreal, Quebec. He died in 1816 in Illinois Territory trying to cross the rain swollen Little Wabash River. His wife, Janne, was born in old Ft. Vincennes and died in the town of Vincennes at the young age of 30. Both are buried in the Old Cathedral Cemetery located in that city.

Susan married Robert Magee Smyth (1810-1840) in Vincennes on Oct. 1, 1833. They were married about seven years and had one known child, Samuel "Sam" Smyth (1834-1910). Robert died in Vincennes in 1840 at the age of 30. He is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in that city.

It was several years after Robert's death before Susan remarried. In 1855 she married Stephen Ingersoll (1796-1867). He died on Mar. 3, 1867 in Crawfordsville, Montpomery Co., Indiana at the age of 70. Stephen is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery next to his first wife, Hannah Elizabeth Bullard (1801-1849).

Susan died on Jan. 3, 1889, also in Crawfordsville, at the age of 74. She too, is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, close to her son, Samuel.
