Source <Monasticon Anglicanum...a history of the abbies and other monasteries...and ...> Par William Dugdale: "SIBTON ABBEY was founded, according to the best authorities, in 1149, by William de Cayneto or Cheney, sometimes called "Willielmus fil. Roberti vieecomes."" It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its first inhabitants were a colony from Wardon in Bedfordshire. Taylor, in his Index Monasticus, says, the revenues of this abbey received considerable additions from the pious contributions of the Lady Margaret de Cressy, and a number of other benefactors; all which donations were confirmed by charters of King Henry the Second and King Henry the Third. The following is given as the list of benefactors: The Lady Margery de Cressy, daughter of the founder, about A.D. 1140; Robert Walensis; William, son of Robert the sheriff ;c William the Black; Geoffrey the Black; Ralph Walensis; Hugh de Cressy; Roger Bigod, earl of Norfolk;...
