Brief overview:
Sylvia (72), was shot dead in front of her ten year-old granddaughter on Farm Kruisement outside Leslie, Mpumalanga on Friday 7th July 2006. She was shot with her son's - Andre's firearm, which was stolen earlier that day. He said his mother took several farm workers to town on Friday afternoon to do shopping, and she returned shortly afterwards. Minutes after she and the child got out of the bakkie, they were attacked by the man. He dragged Sylvia to the back of the bakkie and shot her twice - in the head and the stomach and she died within seconds. The perpetrator slapped and choked the girl then ran away.

- Kheswa pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and robbery with extenuating circumstances. He said he had not fired on purpose. The prosecutor, advocate Johan Kruger, said the girl was receiving counselling since the murder, and was suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress. Captain David Pieterse, a ballistics expert, said the accused's version, that he shot Sylvia during a struggle, was not possible. "There were no powder burn marks on the clothes or the body. Therefore, the shot must have come from further than a metre away.”
