Sylvia Wetelainen, 87, a resident of Mohawk passed away on Tuesday May 10, 2011 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City, MI.
She was born on July 28, 1923 in Mohawk a daughter of the late Nikolai and Marja (Luoma) Olli.
Sylvia graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1942.
On August 24, 1946 she was married to Arthur Wetelainen and he preceded her in death on February 21, 1997.
During WWII she worked for Ford, assembling airplane fuselages. On her return to Mohawk, she worked at Oja’s Market, the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and at Suomi College. She and her husband moved to Negaunee in 1971 and remained there for over 10 years. She worked for D & N Bank, both in Marquette & Hancock, retiring in 1986.
Preceding her in death was her husband, parents, infant brother Wesley and an infant sister Laila.
She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Mohawk and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 230 of Mohawk.
Surviving are: son: David Karen)Wetelainen of Traverse City, MI
Daughter: Susan (James) Wickstrom of Negaunee
3 Grandchildren: Kristine (Andrew) Garn of Saranac, MI and Matthew Wickstrom of Hainesville, IL and Mike (Katie) Moore of Traverse City, MI
3 Great Grandchildren: James & Lillian Garn & Berkley Carlson
Funeral services will be held on Saturday May 14, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Bethany Lutheran Church in Mohawk with Rev. Peter Vorhes to officiate.
Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home on Friday from 5-8 PM and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
