Biography

Cricket Sixkiller was born around 1806 in the Cherokee Nation (now Georgia) to Sixkiller (Also known as Rufus Sixkiller or Old Soldier Sixkiller) and Betsy Smith. Before Removal from the East he lived in Island Town near the Chatooga River. He married Deborah Whaley in the East in 1838, just about a month before Removal.

They traveled West in the Conrad Hair/Colston detachment. They settled in the Goingsnake District in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory near modern-day Westville, OK. They had 7 children. Cricket served for at least 1 year as a tribal councilor for the Goinsnake District before he left to fight in the Civil War.

Cricket served in the 2nd Indian Home Guards in Kansas during the Civil War alongside several of his brothers and other family. He died near Baxter Springs Kansas on September 20, 1862 possibly a casualty of a skirmish near Shirley's Ford on the Spring River (Jasper Co. Missouri). This skirmish was part of the Civil War, hence his Civil War pension. His resting place is unknown.

Cricket (Tah-la-toh Su-dul-de-hee) Sixkiller was the son of Sixkiller (also known as Rufas or Old Soldier) and Gu-er-tsa Smith. He was born in 1806 in Cherokee Nation East, Georgia.

He married Deborah Whaley August 1, 1838 in Georgia and they came to eastern Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. Their detachment began August 28, 1838 under the direction of Hair Conrad, but Assistant Conductor Daniel Colston took over in leading the group west.

Cricket Sixkiller was elected councilor of the Cherokee Nation representing Goingsnake District in 1861, one of several in his family to serve as councilors.

Cricket and his wife Deborah had seven children -- Jacob, Nancy, Jennie, John 'Jonas', Lucinda, Susie and James.

He later married Elizabeth Foreman, daughter of Thomas Foreman Sr. and Susannah Fields. They had one daughter, Eliza Jane. Elizabeth would later marry Cricket's brother, Redbird.

Cricket Sixkiller died September 20, 1862 in Baxter Springs, Kansas during the Civil War.*
