Takla El-Samouili (Father) (– 2024)

Brief overview:

Takla El-Samouili, Youstos Ava-Markos and Mina Ava-Markostre, three Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Monks, were killed at the Saint Mark and Saint Samuel the Confessor monastery in Cullinan on 12th March 2024.

All three were discovered with stab wounds, provincial police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency. A survivor told the police he was hit by an iron rod but managed to escape and hide. "The suspect/s reportedly left the scene without taking any valuable item or properties from the place. The motive of murders is unknown at this stage," Nevhuhulwi added.

“There is no doubt that it is a painful incident,” Pope Tawadros II said in a statement on Wednesday, calling the monks “martyrs” and saying that the church had sent a delegation to South Africa.

A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with the killings. The suspect, whose name was not made public, was due to be arraigned in court on Thursday.
