From Thomas E. Fleming, correspondent. The exact parentage of Emma (John or William) remains speculative to my source who was/is Charles F. Putnam of 7 Agawam Road, West Acton, Mass 07120. Mr. Putnam is a distant relative who wrote a letter on Sept 20, 1982 to a Mrs. Mc Quinn forwarding the genealogy that he had acquired on the Bonnell/Bunnell families to her. I have never corresponded with the gentleman. The letter and packet of genealogy was shared with me by a Mrs. Murray, a cousin of my mother who lived in Penobsquis in 1989. In explaining his problems with his work on the family to date was the question of Emma Sprague's parents. He writes ..."When it comes to Daniel, son of Issac(Bunnell) and Jerusha (Sherwood), I have another problem. Based on a History of Millstream, written by the late Ralph J. Coy and published in the Kings County Record on Wednesday, November 8, 1878, and, based on a Deed dated 1800 in which Daniel Bunnell and his wife Emma, are grantors, it would appear that Daniel probably married about 1795 a daughter of William Mc Leod, Sen. He was given part of the Mc Leod grant at Lower Milllstream. He had a son, Samuel, who apparently died in infancy, and his wife died soon afterwards. He married again about 1800 to Emma Sprague. He and his wife Emma sold the home of at Lower Millstream and moved to Upper Sussex (Penobsquis) and probably received land there from Emma's father. Daniel's tombstone is located in the Pioneer Cemetery on the Trans Canada Highway between Penobsquis and Sussex. I wish I knew more about his wife Emma. I have enclosed a copy of a picture of her that Mrs. Murry loaned me to get copied. The original is of the vintage of the 1860's-1870's when she was very old. I have done a lot of work on the Sprague family - Widow Love Sprague and her sons, William and John came to New Brunswick in 1783 with their families. Emma came with them as an infant, but I can not prove for sure whether William or John was her father. I have the whole Sprague family genealogy and can trace that line for you but am still seeking more information to finish it up, I know that William Sprague had 9 children as of 1814 including John, William, George, and Ann. That leaves several more to identify. William was born in Main in 1750-51 and his wife's name was Elizabeth. John, the brother of William brought 3 children and his wife with him to New Brunswick in 1783. He left the Penobsquis area in 1800 and in 1805 had 5 children living with him. I have identified nearly all of his children, but is possible that Emma was one of his oldest children. If you know anything about the Sprague Family I would be interested to know about it. For one thing the picture proves that Emma was living in 1851 at the time of the Census, but I have so far been unable to find her in the census. If I could find her listed and her then it would answer a lot of questions for me. For your information Daniel Bunnell had a daughter, Emma, who married Daniel Goddard of South Branch. My wife is descended through this line."
