About Terrence McDermott
Daily Independent Thursday, July 18, 1895 A very sad accident occurred in Lamoille Valley about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon by which Terrence the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. McDermott, was so badly scalded that he died about 9 o'clock this morning. The little fellow had followed his father to the field in the afternoon and becoming tired his father took him to the house. Shortly after getting home the boy said he was hungry, his mother told one of his sisters about twelve years old to go out to the summer kitchen and fry him a couple of eggs. The girl went out, and , as Mrs. McDermott had been washing, found a kettle of water on the stove which she set off on the ground and went about her work. The little boy was playing around and walked backward against the kettle and fell back, setting down in the boiling water. He was immediately lifted out and his father summoned. The parents saw immediately that their darling boy was badly burned and as soon as possible a team was hitched up and the little sufferer was brought to town. Mr. McDermott drove from his house to town, a distance of twenty-two miles, in a little over two hours. Arriving here Dr. McDowell was summoned and did what he could to relieve the suffering of the boy, but all to no avail, as about 9 o'clock this morning the Angel of Death touched his eyelids and bore his spirit to the unseen world.
Although the skin all peeled off the little fellow's hips he never once murmured or cried and died as peacefully and quietly as though going to sleep on his mothers breast. The funeral will take place in Lamoille some time tomorrow the remains will be laid away there for their last long rest. The brothers and sisters of the deceased arrived from their home in Lamoille this afternoon and their grief over their little brothers sad death was enough to melt the stoutest heart. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends in their great sorrow. May he who said , " Suffer little children to come onto me, for such is the kingdom of heaven," comfort and console them in this hour of trial.
As one can see the headstone is incorrect, so many are, sad.The newspaper account is correct. Research by ~ JMB
