About Tertius Wehmeyer
Tertius Wehmeyer (1944 - 2008)
Brief overview:
Tertius (64), a sheep farmer and a builder, was stabbed, then shot while trying to save his partner Ella van Bommel, when they were attacked by two armed males at their Boekenhoutkloof, smallholding outside Pretoria on 5th November 2008.
Around 21h00, Wehmeyer went outside to close a tap after watering his garden and was overpowered by the two armed perpetrators. He shouted to Ella to close the door. He was first stabbed and while lying bleeding on the ground, they shot him execution-style. The perpetrators then struck Ella with a steel pipe until she was unconscious. She survived the attack.
Mr. Tjaart Smith, 60, who has been friends with Wehmeyer and his partner Ella for 35 years said, "It seems he has moved back to behind a big tree when they shot him." "Ella jumped up and tried to close the door, but the attackers opened it with a steel pipe and hit her over the head, arms and back until she lost consciousness," Smith said. When Van Bommel came to, the killers were gone. She ran to her parents' house in the back of the yard to get help. She ran to the garden to look for Wehmeyer and found himself dead behind the tree. The attackers had made a hole in the fence to enter the yard.
Van Bommel's son, Antonie (37) said his mother and Wehmeyer, to whom he refers as his father, have been partners for the past 17 years. He said the murderers fled with cell phones, jewellery and other valuables. The police and ambulance services only arrived two hours later.
Insp. Police spokesperson Wanda Olivier said police were investigating the incident. The crime-ridden communities of Kameeldrift and Cullinan handed over a petition to the Kameeldrift and Cullinan police stations, expressing their dissatisfaction with the ongoing crime. The following day the community gathered at 11:00 am across the Cullinan police station.
