About The Most Reverend Jean-François Hubert, PSS
Overview
Jean-François Hubert trained at the Sulpician seminary in Montréal, was ordained in 1766 and consecrated bishop of Québec in 1788. He became the first Canadian superior of the Québec seminary and resigned 2 years prior to his term of office was to end. He joined the Illinois mission. Hubert returned to Québec in 1779. The sick D'Esgly created problems for Hubert due to his insistence that everything to be done required his permission. A lack of priests was a problem for Msg Hubert. Québec had grown to 160,000 in 1790 with only 146 priests. Many parishes had no resident priest. In 1796 he created an ecclesiastical fund to provide for the needs of priests who were worn out or ill.
