Joseph Signay (he signed Signaï) was a priest and archbishop in Quebec. He was ordained in 1802. He became archbishop in 1825. he had a reputation for timidity, however, when disaster struck Quebec in the form of 2 cholera epidemics and the burning of the foubourgs Saint-Roch and Saint-Jean, he was the first to organize relief and urge people to help others. He also contributed financially. His piety and his fondness for well-run ceremonies and for the liturgy in general were universally recognized.
