Paul La Rocque was a priest and bishop who was ordained in 1869 and installed as bishop of Sherbrooke in 1893. His family includes prominent members of the Catholic clergy: his brother Charles La Rocque, his fathers cousings Joseph La Rocque and Charles La Rocque a sister who became a nun and a second cousin Mathilde Davignon. He had a sickly consistution and was sent as missionary to Key West Florida to gain strength and was there for 10 years. He then studied in Rome from 1880-1884. His tenure as bishop coincided with a growth of the catholic population from 60,000 in 1896 to 150,000 in 1924 along with an increase in priests and new parishes. In his final years, he devoted himself to new catholic initiatives such as a weekly newspaper, catholic and national labour unions, closed retreats (Villa Saint-Alphonse, 1923), Semaine Sociale (1924). He died widely venerated.
