About The Most Reverend Pierre-Herman Dosquet, PSS
Overview
Pierre-Herman Dosquet, sulpician, priest of the Missions Étrangères and 4th bishop of Québec. He was ordained in 1716, installed as bishop in 1733 and served till 1739. He was coadjutor for Bishop François Duplessis de Mornay (who never set foot in Canada). He was not popular. He issued pastoral letters that forbade priests to be served by women unless they were close relatives, prohibited ecclesiastics from wearing wigs, and barred schoolmasters from teaching classes with students of both sexes. Dosquet spent his last years as bishop of Quebec traveling in France.He finally resigned, as he did not wish to return to Canada.
