Theo (71), a farmer from Grootvlei near Balfour, and his wife Marlinda, were attacked by four assailants on the morning of Sunday 30th July 2023. The couple was assaulted. Theo, who was attacked outside the house, was struck with an iron across his head and face. He was then forced into the house, the attackers slit his throat. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Marlinda was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
"According to Mpumalanga National Prosecuting Authorities spokesperson Monica Nyuswa, the accused went to the farm and attacked Theo, demanding his firearm and money. "They suffocated the deceased's wife with a plastic bag and assaulted her several times. They then robbed the victims of an undisclosed amount of money, a firearm, and a vehicle which they drove away with."
The perpetrators, aged between 16 and 19, ransacked the house and stole an unknown amount of cash and three firearms, and then fled in the couples Renault Kwid, which they subsequently crashed and rolled. The vehicle was found overturned in Villiers in the Free State, 25 kilometres from the farm. A community member who witnessed the accident notified the Villiers police, after which a manhunt was launched.
Before losing consciousness, Marlinda was able to identify two of the four attackers who murdered Theo.
All four of the perpetrators, two of whom worked for the couple, were arrested and charged with murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and robbery.
They will appear in the Balfour Magistrate's court on Tuesday 1st August.
