About Theresa Pfeilsticker (Hummel)
Wabasha County Herald - Thursday, October 3, 1907 MRS. THERESA HOUSWEDELL DEAD (sic) Mrs. Theresa Houswedell, mother of ex-sheriff Housewedell, died at the family residence Monday afternoon. The cause of death was cancer of the stomach, from which she had suffered for some months. Her funeral will occur Friday morning at 10 o’clock from St. Felix church. Father Wurst officiating. The internment will be in the family lot in Riverview cemetery. The casket will be lowered into the grave by her six grandsons. Deceased’s maiden name was Theresa Hummel. She was born at Baden, Germany on October 6, 1835. When a girl eighteen year of age she emigrates to this country, arriving in St. Louis in the spring of 1854. In the fall of the same year she came to Reeds Landing, and on March 20, 1856, she was united in marriage to Louis Pfeilsticker. For two years they continued to operate the Minnesota House, one of the pioneer hostelries of the village of Reeds. In 1858 they moved to Wabasha and opened a bake shop which they continued to operate up to 1871, when the husband died, leaving her with four children, Louis Jr., Frank, Louisa, now Mrs. Peter Jacobs of Lincoln county, and Emma, now Mr. Peter Theisen of Zumbro Falls. In 1873 she married Louis Houswedell, who died Sept. 7, 1905, leaving one son, George. Deceased possessed one of those striking personalities that is bound to win success anywhere, and was a splendid type of that good old German character that ever stands for honesty and integrity. With her there were no good apples on top of measure when poor ones were farther down. She was frugal, honest, industrious, a good neighbor, and a devoted wife and mother, and the beloved of a large circle. She was a successful business woman, and as an evidence of a life of thrift she leaves a large estate.
