Biography

Teunis Hercksen|Hendrickzen aka Teunis Cranckheyt [His father used the name "Hendrick Siboutszen" for Teunis' baptism, one of 9 different given names he used for the baptism of his 15 children.] the surname Cranckheyt was used later in life.

Teunis and Sophia appear in Sleepy Hollow church list as members from Cortlandt Manor sometime between 1697 and 1716. Name

[At his baptism Teunis, son of Hendrick|Harrick|Herck|Siboutszen|Syboutszen (with numerous variations of given name and surname) was not baptized with the surname "Kranckheyt" (variations). This suggest that his last name at birth LNAB) should not be Kranckheyt, but rather be based on "Herck" which was the given name his father most commonly used (for the baptism of his 15 children, he used 9 different variations of his given name, Hendrick was one.). This would logically make Teunis' surname "Herckszen" following the Dutch patronymic system. Hendrickszen would be recorded as an alias in Teunis' instance. Further, I would suggest that Kranckheyt be recorded as an alias.]

Many of the children of Herck Syboutszen adopted Cranckheyt as a surname during their lifetimes, even though they were not baptized with this name. This instance may be the earliest uses of the surname "Krankheyt" in Herck|Hendrick Siboutszen|Sybotszen and Weyntie Theunis|Teunis Quick family, Teunis used this name in addition to his patronymic name, for his September 10, 1679 marriage. This marriage is supposed to have occurred at Newtown, Queens, Long Island, and was recorded at the central Reformed Dutch Church of Manhattan, New York. Baptism

Teunis Herrickse (Hercks, Hercx, etc) was the sixth child of Hendrick Siboutszen and Weyntje Teunis Quick. He is the first child to be born after they moved from New Amsterdam to the Arme Bowery (farm) at Hell Gate, then a part of Newtown, Long Island. His parents had moved there with his five older siblings in 1654.

Teunis Hendrickzen Cranckheyt was born to Hendrick Siboutszen and Weyntie Teunis Quick at Arme Bouwery or "Hell Gate," then a part of Newtown, Queens, Long Island. He was baptized on 04 Jul, 1655. His baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam on Jul 4, 1655[1] [2]. This child was sponsored by his grandparents, Teunis Teuniszen, Quick and Belitje Jacobs. This record of baptism need not suggest that a local baptism had not taken place, officiated by a traveling Dominee.

His older siblings were born in New Amsterdam, however in 1654, his parents had moved to the Arme Bouwery at "Hell Gate," then a part of Newton, Long Island. We do not know exactly when he was born, but it would have been after his sister Engeltje was baptized [May 17, 1654] and he was baptized in July the following year. Marriage

Theunis Hercxen [Krankheyt] married Sophia Hendricks [Wiltsie] on Sep 10, 1679. Their marriage was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Manhattan, New York, NY.[3]

[This marriage record transcribed from NYRDC records by Samuel S. Purple. ( From Samuel S. Purple's 'Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York, Marriages from 11 December 1639 to 26 August 1801.') does not follow the normal presentation format for the time; it provides surnames in addition to the patronym in the transcribed record.] Death

Teunis Hercksen died ca. 1709 in Westchester Co., New York. Possible locations of death include the communities of Cortlandt Manor, Sleepy Hollow, Philipsburg or "Terwe Town" (Wheat Town). These communities are adjacent to, or within, the modern village of Terrytown, Greenburgh Twp., Westchester Co., NY Church records
