Teunis Donwense Tallman (M) b. 8 February 1665, d. 17 July 1739

Teunis Donwense Tallman was also known as Teunis Donwense Talema. He was also known as Theunis Tallman. He was also known as Theunis Douwe Tallman. He was baptized on 8 February 1665 at Dutch Reformed Church, Bergen, Hudson County, New Jersey. He was the son of Douwe Harmansen Tallman and Dirckje Theunise. Teunis Donwense Tallman married Brechtje Haring, daughter of Jan Pieterse Haring and Grietje Cozyns, circa 1694 at Bergen County, New Jersey. Had four sons and four daughters. Teunis Donwense Tallman married Margrietje Hogencamp on 11 January 1710 at Tappan, Rockland County, New York. Teunis Donwense Tallman died on 17 July 1739 at Nyack, Rockland County, New York, at age 74.

"The County of Range (including Rockland) was organized Nov. 1 1683 and Theunis Taelman was appointed First High Sheriff until 1702. He removed to Nyack, N.Y. and his holdings comprised some 3600 acres. He lived in Nyack until his death July 17, 1739."

From "The Tallman/Taulman/Talma Family":

"The 1702 Provincial census of Orange County lists Theunis Dowsen (Taelman) and his brother Harme Dowsen (Tallman).

In 1702, the newly appointed Governor, Edward Hyde, Lord Cornbury, ordered his sheriffs to conduct a census of New York Province. The High Sheriff of Orange County, Theunis Taelman, being unable to write, was less than enthusiastic and summarily replaced by Capt. William Merritt of Snedens Landing. "

The children of Douwe Harmense were Harman, Douwe, Dirckje, Jannetie and Theunis. Of these Theunis was born at Bergen, N. J., and Married (first) in 1694 Brechje, daughter of Peter Haring, of Tappan, and Margaretta Janse Bobert of Bedford, Long Island, and (Second) on January 11, 1710, Marguetje, daughter of Myndert Hogencamp.

The county of Orange (including then the present Rockland county) was organized Nov. 1, 1683, and Theunis first High Sheriff, serving until 1702. He removed to Nyack about the time of the grant of the Douwe Harmense patent there and appears to have become possessed of the greater part, if not all, of that property after his father's death; his total holding, including his own subsequent purchases, comprising some 3600 acres. He continued to live in Nyack until his death on July 17, 1739.

The children of Theunis Taelman by his first wife were Dirck, Gritje, Dirckje, Douwe, Marytie, Brechie, Harman and Jan, and by his second wife, Brechie, Jannetje, Teunis, Harme and Autje. Of the children by the second marriage, Harme became the owner of the lands comprised within the original Douwe Harmensen patent and after his death the property was divided under his will among his sons in three equal parts, the north side to Harmanus, the middle to Thunis and the south to Abraham. The ancient Tallman homestead on Broadway, Nyack, stands upon the northern portion of the original patent allotted to Harmanus (see above) and is believed to have been commenced by Theunis Taelman about 1678. It is still in good condition, having been enlarged at four different periods and is now in possession of Miss Clara Tallman, daughter of the late Teunis Depew Tallman, who was the son of Mychel Tallman, one of the sons of Harmanus Tallman. It will thus be seen that this old house has been in the continuous possession of the family for six generations.

From "The Bauvelt Family" Second Generation (page 8):

"Jan Pieterse in all probability never took up residence o n the Tappan Patent, for he died in December 1683, but it w ould seem that some of the patentees did settle there and b egin to improve the land during that year.

On February 2nd. 1685 Margaretje Cozine, widow of Jan Piete rse (Haring), married Daniel de Clark, and he seems to hav e taken oven the leadership of the Tappan patentees which , until his death, had been exercised by Haring. Indeed, ac cording to Mr. Budke, the patentees were frequently referre d to as Daniel de Clark & Company, and it was Daniel who i n 1700 built the house at Tappan known as Washington's Head quarters.

On September 17th., 1685 the inhabitants of Tappan and "Hav erstroo" were summoned to appear before the Governor and Co uncil of the Province of New York with their "writings an d patents". In accordance with this, on October 8th., 1685 , Pieter Jansen "Harre", "Tebart" (Huybert) Gerretsen (Blau velt), and daniel Clark did so appear; and again on Octobe r 13th. All of the patentees, except Jan de Vries, Jr., see m to have assembled before the Council. No patent was issue d, however, until March 17th., 1686-7, when the document he re shown was issued over the signature of Thomas Dongan, Go vernor, etc., of the Province of New York. For those who ca re to read it, the full text of this document, with its qua int verbage, may be found on page 40, Vol. II of the Rockla nd Record, or in Coles' History of Rockland County, on pag e 197.

Abount seven years later, on October 24th., 1694, eleven pe rsons were gathered together to organize the Tappan Reforme d Dutch Church. They were -- Lambert Ariaensen (Smith) and his wife Margaretje Gerrets e (Blauvelt) Cornelius Jansen Haring and his wife Cathalyntje Flierboom, Johannes Gerretse (Blauvelt) Cozine Jansen Haring and his wife Maria Gerretse (Blauvelt) Theunis Van Houten and his wife Tryntje Classen (Cooper) Theunis Talman and his wife Breeche Janse Harring.

It will be noted that three of these were the children of G errit Handricksen, two were the husbands of Blauvelts and o ne was the sister-in-law, so it was somewhat of a family af fair. Not only that, though the parents were not of the ele ven founders, the very firstentry in the baptismal registe r of the Tapan Church is the baptism of the children of Abr aham Gerretse (Blauvelt) and Grietje Minne.

We have seen that two of the Tappan patentees were Johane s and Huybert Gerretse, sons of Gerrit Hendricksen, and tw o others, Lambert Ariaensen (Smith) and Cozine Haring had m arried two of Gerrit's daughters. In fact, by purchase of t he shares of other patentees, all of the surviving childre n of Gerrit, with the one exception of the daughter Elizabe th, child of the second marriage, became share-holders in t he Patent and took up residence thereon.

(7) Hendrick Gerretse Blauvelt was born in New York, and ba ptised in the New York Dutch Church September 30th., 1654 . On September 20th., 1673 he married Marretje Waldron, (N. Y.D.C.). She was the daughter of Joseph Waldron and Annetj e Daniels and was born supposedly in New York in 1652.

Though not one of the original patentees, he apparently too k up his residence on the Patent with the earliest settler s in 1683, although all of his children, with one exception , we know were baptised in New York. He most certainly too k the Oath of Allegiance in Orange County in 1687, and he a nd his wife were received into the Tappan Church on Octobe r 23rd., 1695.

He served on the first Grand Jury in Orange County in 1703 , and was the tax collector in 1704. In 1709 he purchased f ifty acres of land at what is now Orangeburg, N.Y. for £16 , ($40.00), and here he built a stone house, just west of t he Clausland Burying Ground. It was still standing as lat e as 1935.

We do not know when he or his wife died, or where they wer e buried, but we do know that he was listed in the census o f 1712.

The children of Hendrick (7) and Marretje Waldron were:-- 17 Marretje, bapt. N.Y.D.C., Sept. 8, 1674, Died in infancy. 18 Marretje, bapt. N.Y.D.C., Oct. 11, 1676. 19 Jan, bapt. N.Y.D.C., Jan. 22, 1679. 20 Harmanus, bapt. N.Y.D.C., April 3, 1681. 21 Gerrit, bapt. N.Y.D.C., Jan. 10, 1683. 22 Annetje, bapt. N.Y.D.C., June 14, 1685. 23 Joseph, bapt. N.Y.D.C., Nov. 20, 1687. 24 Abraham, bapt. N.Y.D.C., March 2, 1690. 25 Isaac, bapt. N.Y.D.C., April 24, 1692. 26 Daniel,

(William Helson, in his History of Paterson, also gives a c hild Hendrick, but I feel sure this is an error.)

(8) Huyber Gerretse Blauvelt was born in New York, baptise d in the New York Dutch Church May 13th., 1657. On April 15 th., 1679, while living at Stuyvesant's Bouwerie, he marrie d Willemtje Ariaens (Smith), daughter of Ariaen Lamberts an d Dirckje Cornelis, who we believe was born at Thuyl in Gel derlandt, Netherlands, about 1660. He was one of the Tappa n patentees, and, since he was one of those who made the jo urney into the wilderness to negotiate with the Indians an d also to Elizabeth for the interview with Governor Cartere tt, it would appear that he was one of the first to take u p residence on the patent, and it would appear that he sett led south of the present village of Tappan, and over the li ne in what is now New Jersey. He took the Oath of Allegianc e in 1687. Just when he died we do not know. His last chil d was born in 1690, and when the patent lands were divide d in 1704 his portion was conveyed to his surviving childre n, thus signifying he had died prior to the time.

The children of Huybert Gerretse, (8), and Willemtje Ariaen se were:-- 27 Gerrit, bapt. N.Y.D.C., Aug. 21, 1680. 28 Ariaen, bapt. N.Y.D.C., Sept. 16, 1682, died young. 29 Maritje, bapt. N.Y.D.C., Nov. 17, 1684. 30 Dirckje, bapt. N.Y.D.C., April 3, 1687. "
