About Thomas Daniel Allen

Thomas Allen or perhaps Thomas Daniel Allen. It seems possible two different men have been combined here, perhaps father and son or perhaps two brothers.

The Revolutionary War application of Daniel Allen, says Daniel came from Rockingham County where his unnamed father lived in 1788. The pension application of Daniel's wife names his father as Thomas Allen, a farmer in Rockingham County, North Carolina.

Note that his death date is given both as 30 July 1759 and 30 July 1799. According to LDS postings by Bill Ravey and James Kennedy, Thomas Allen. Sr. was born about 1735, "probably Orange County, NC and died 30 July 1759, Rockingham County, NC." A source is needed. If he died in 1759 he could not have been father of the children listed here.

A Thomas Allen appears on the 1790 census of Rockingham County, but it is not clear this the same person. That Thomas has a household consisting of 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, and 3 females.

Ancestry

His ancestry is unknown. He has been speculated as a son of:

  • William Hunt Allen and Mary Owen. However, the relationship does not seem possible. William Hunt Allen listed all of his children by his two wives in his will. He does not name a son Daniel Allen. He names a son Thomas Allin, who was not this Thomas Daniel Allen.
  • Robert Allen and Elizabeth Stokes. This Robert was a brother of William Hunt Allen, above. There is no evidence he had a son named either Thomas or Daniel.
  • William Allen and Sarah Smith. They had a son Thomas Allen but he died in New Jersey. He was not this Thomas Daniel Allen.

The Allen and Bethel families were founding members of Brush Creek Baptist Church in Smith County, Tennessee in 1802. Some members of his family were dismissed by letter in 1837, which probably represents the date of their removal to Missouri. See http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mpsmith/V1_1_10.html.

Caution: Some facts might pertain to a different Daniel Allen.

The basic outline of his family is given by a history of Callaway County, Missouri, which says, "Bethel, Sampson and Thomas Allen, sons of Daniel Allen and Elizabeth Bethel, settled in Callaway County in 1817.

Daniel Allen married Elizabeth Bethell, who was probably a sister of Sampson Bethell. Daniel Allen was witness to a 1782 survey of Sampson Bethell in Guilford County, North Carolina; it may have been Daniel Allen who first settled in Smith County and encouraged the Bethells to come there. The first settlement in that particular area had been made only three years earlier, in 1798.
