Thomas and Elizabeth Avery emigrated to New Zealand on the 'Bolton' departing Gravesend in 1839 and arriving in Port Nicholson, NZ in 1840. The 'Bolton' was a very slow craft and the journey was a very long one. The passengers disembarked at Thornton Beach and a greater part of them lived in very primitive shanties that was known as 'Bolton Row'

Elizabeth & Thomas were married in Maidstone 1 July 1821. They sailed on the Bolton, arriving 21 April 1840 and their first address was recorded as Petone foreshore. They also lived in Waiwhetu
