VETERAN OF THE FRENCH & INDIAN WARS

Thomas served as a scout in the French and Indian Wars. He married his 1st cousin, Martha Lippitt.

THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WARS (1689 - 1763, especially 1754-1763), by Larry Overmire: The French and Indian Wars were part of an ongoing, decades long, conflict among European powers for domination of the North American continent, though historians designate the period from 1754-1763 as The French and Indian War itself, also called The Seven Years War. By 1754, the French owned most of America, including Canada, the Great Lakes, the Ohio River Valley and the area of New France, which ran along the Mississippi to Louisiana. To protect their land claims from encroachment by the English, the French erected a series of forts along the western frontier, notably Fort Duquesne near Pittsburgh, Fort Niagara, and Fort Carillon (Ticonderoga) on Lake Champlain. Indians allied themselves with both the French and the English, sometimes playing them against one another. Sudden enemy raids were frequent and much suffering was inflicted on all those involved. The gruesome practice of "scalping" one's victims was encouraged by the Europeans, a bounty paid for each enemy scalp. In 1754, the conflict gained intensity with the defeat of a young George Washington at Fort Necessity. In response, the British sent General Edward Braddock on a march towards Fort Duquesne, in typical European style, neat rows of three men abreast. They were completely oblivious, however, to the French and their Indian allies hiding in the woods, guerilla-style. The English were massacred. Even when the English soldiers tried to break ranks to fight more effectively, they were beaten back into their ranks by their officers. In June of 1759, the English sent a large force under the command of General James Wolfe to lay siege to Quebec. In September, the city fell. Soon, the British had control of almost all of North America, including Montreal and Detroit, which fell by the end of 1760. The Treaty of Paris, February 10, 1763, brought an end to the conflict, ceding North America east of the Mississippi (other than New Orleans) to the British. A decade of peace followed--the calm before the storm.

"THOMAS, Warwick, or Kingstown, s. of Roger, m. Martha, d. of Moses Lippit, as from wills of her f. and h. is gain. but I profit no more." --James Savage
