Thomas Cary was born in 1698. On June 16, 1727, he patents lands in King and Queen Counties which had been "devised by John Pate, dec'd. to Capt. Miles Cary ", describing himself as Thomas Cary, Jr. of Warwick County. He acquired the plantation known as Essex Lodge in Your County by deed, dated Nov. 16, 1728 (formerly belonging to the Burshrods), and there lived most of his life. ln 1753, he sold the "Essex Lodge" to his brother, Maj. Miles Cary b. 1701, and when he died was living, as shown by his will, on place called "Pokashock" in Chesterfield County.

ln the name of God Amen, l Thomas Cary, of Chesterfield County, being sick and weak of Body, but of perfact Sence and Memory, praise be to Almighty God for the same, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament, in manner and form following, Viz:
lmprimis, l recommend my soul to God that gave it and my body to the Earth, to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named; and for what worldly estate l have, after my just Debts and Funeral charges are paid, l bequeath as follows:
ltem: l leave to be sold to pay my Debts, one hundred acres of Land, part of my Tract that is joining Henry Cox.
ltem: l give and bequeath unto my beloved son, Robert Cary and his heirs forever, half of my Tract of Land on Pokashock, after the above one hundred acres is laid off to be sold.
ltem: l give and bequeath to my beloved son, Thomas Cary and his heirs forever, the other half of my Tract of Land on Pokashock, after the above one hundred acres is laid off to be sold.
Item: My will and Desire is that my beloved wife, Dorithy's dower of land should be laid off in proportion from each part of my Son's land. I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Dorithy her riding mare and Saddle.
Item: I give and bequeath all the Residue of Estate, both Real and Personal, to be appraised and then to be equally divided between my beloved wife Dorithy and my beloved sons, Robert and Thomas Cary, to them and their heirs forever.
Item: I appoint and constitute my beloved wife Dorthy and my two sons Robert Cary and Thomas Cary whole and sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament, as witness my Hand and Seal this Twelfth day of August, DMCCLIV, " (1754)
