The Thomas Chandler you refer to was my gggg-grandfather. The book by L. Thelma Chandler Walters and Theodore B. Walters, THE CHANDLER FAMILY, A HISTORY OF THE CHANDLER FAMILY OF EASTERN KEnTUCKY (1974) says the following about Thomas:
"According to William C. Kozee (The Early Families of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky), the first Chandler ancestor to arrive in the Big Sandy Valley was a THOMAS CHANDLER who settled near the present Wayne County Courthouse in Wayne County, West Virginia {then Virginia} about 1806.
"It is believed that THOMAS CHANDLER was born in North Carolina in 1762 becuase he stated in his petition for a pension that he filed in the Cabell County Virginia Court (now West Virginia)on October 22, l827, that he was 65 years old (his wife 64 years old; that he enlisted as a private in March, 1780, in the 10th Regiment, North Carolina Continental Lines for a period of three years. After the war he lived in Wythe and Tazewell Counties, Virginia (new West Virginia) before settling near the present Wayne County Courthouse."
This same book indicates Thomas died in l845 or l846 in Wayne County. There is no reference to his wife, but his children were: Katie Chandler (m. Jiles Green)
Abraham Chandler
Sally Chandler (m. George Plyes)
Elizabeth Chandler (m. Enoch Green)
Polly (Mary) Chandler (m. William
Jarrett)
Henry Chandler
The rest of this 2 inch book traces their descendants. Though it does not mention Thomas, another book that covers many Chandlers, including descendants of Thomas Chandler's. is Clayton R. Cox, APPALACIHIA CROSSROADS, DESCENDANTS OF HEZEKIAH SELLARDS
(1977).
The company in which Thomas served in the Revolutionary war was commanded by a Captain Lytle. His pension application says he fought at the battle where Gen. [Horatio] Gates was defeated. This was probably the battle of Camden, in the Carolinas in l780.
His miltary records include promissory note for $20.00 dated Feb. 1785 in "final settlement of his account" for serving in the war.
Thomas Chandler appears on the Census records for Cabell County in l820, 1830 and 1840. At that time the names of women and children were not listed.
I am VERY interested to learn that Thomas's wife was named Amasa Jane. Does her name appear on any records? If so, I would be interested in knowing which records. I would also be VERY interested in any information about her being a Cherokee Indian.
E-mail on these two matters or other details about Thomas or Amasa would be welcomed at raynes@uakron.edu
Thank you.
